Home Learning
This new ‘Home Learning’ section on our class page will help us to stay connected whilst school is closed due to COVID-19 and give you and your families help and advice in supporting your learning at home.
We have been busy developing a way to give guidance on learning and activities that can be done at home which will be useful rather than overwhelming during these strange times. We have created weekly home learning grids for each class which suggest activities for English, Maths, the wider curriculum and family fun.
The idea is that children choose one activity from each section to complete per day so they will be doing four of these activities daily. These home learning grids will be uploaded onto our website (in ‘Our Classes’ section) for each class every Monday by 11am.
We understand that everyone is living through their own challenges at this time and that life is difficult right now. Your own and your children’s mental health and wellbeing is and always will be the priority so we hope these grids are a help rather than a hindrance. We know you will be trying your best to support children’s learning but it is such a surreal situation to be in so we really hope these grids give a little guidance and structure to your efforts. The activities are by no means exhaustive but we feel they will be useful in giving children some motivation and purpose to their home learning.
Don’t forget to read every day and check out our list of useful websites and the government has launched their BBC Bitesize channel today (which you can watch via BBC iPlayer -search Bitesize- or by pressing the red button on your remote when watching BBC1) which has a range of activities, games and quizzes for each year group if children would like to do any extra tasks or activities.
Please let us know if you have any feedback on our home learning grids- this is new to us too!

Second Half of our Spring Term
During the second half of our Spring Term the children have been learning about animal groups. We linked our work on birds and eggs to our work on the Christian celebration of Easter. The children enjoyed various craft activities such as decorating eggs and speaking about the symbolism of the egg for Christians. In finding out about other animal classes we used clay to make snakes, including characteristics such as scales. We also explored reptiles, mammals, fish and amphibians in paintings, collage and poetry.
We linked this knowledge to our Science work on materials, deciding upon the most appropriate materials to use for enclosures for the different animals and using construction materials to build our designs.
In DT we explored moving pictures and assembled our own pivot, flap and sliding mechanisms to accompany traditional tales and Easter cards.
We found out about Judo from Dan the coach and very much enjoyed finding out about different moves and holds.
As part of our Mathematics and Science work on the seasons we used the Nature Detectives site and investigated signs of Spring in our pond and meadow areas.
Life in Different Locations
The children have used the Katie Morag stories to find out about life in a differing location. We have found out about the physical and human features of Katie’s island of Struay. We have compared these to the features of our locality. The children have practised their drawing and painting skills whilst designing illustrations for the Katie Morag stories. We have created maps and extended this learning by using collage to make larger scale maps.
Learning about Greece and Slovakia
Katie from our class invited her Mum to tell us about her childhood in Greece and Darcy’s mum told us about growing up in Slovakia. We found out about the different features of these countries. We enjoyed making a traditional Greek salad.
Learning about India
Mrs Prasad told us all about growing up in India. We found out about cobras, elephants, traditional dress and had the opportunity to sample Indian food! We also really enjoyed learning and performing an Indian Bhangra dance.
